Located in the Piney Woods Transition Zone of the Outer Gulf Coastal Plain, this project primarily aims to reduce hazardous fuels in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). Secondary benefits include forest health and wildlife habitat enhancement, improved aesthetics and public recreation possibilities, and greater public awareness of WUI issues. Implemented in stages, the project first calls for mechanically mulching ladder fuels from the under story. The second stage entails prescribed burning, including initial entry and maintenance burns. Long-term positive effects on the community of Groveton, Texas include a decreased risk of catastrophic wildfire and a more aesthetically pleasing and accessible forest for the public. Currently, a mulching contractor, using a specialized tractor attachment, is approximately 80 percent complete. Additionally, District personnel have implemented 500 acres of initial prescribed fire.
